When winter weather hits, it’s important that commercial businesses are prepared to keep their employees and customers safe. By ensuring proper commercial snow removal, slips and falls on snow and ice can be avoided.
As facility managers are typically in charge of scheduling snow removal work orders for a business, it’s important that they understand what equipment is typically used in the event of winter weather.
Common Snow Removal Equipment Used for Commercial Businesses
1. Snow Blower
A snow blower is a tool that is used for removing snow from sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways. When a service provider uses a snow blower, snow is blown and deposited to the side of the path being serviced. There are various types of snow blowers- the most common for commercial facility maintenance being back-pack snow blowers and push snow blowers.
2. Tailgate Spreader
Tailgate spreaders are devices that spread salt- commonly attached to tailgate of a truck. These spreaders are used for pre-snow treatment prior to winter weather. They can also be used to melt ice after snow has fallen in order to clear a driveway or parking lot.
3. Snowplow
Plows are probably the most recognized piece of commercial snow removal equipment. A snowplow is a piece of equipment that is mounted on a vehicle with the purpose of pushing snow and ice away from a specific area. For commercial businesses, snowplows are used to remove snow and ice from parking lots and driveways.
For winter parking lot and driveway maintenance, service providers typically use either a straight plow or a V-plow to service an area. Straight plows are used to push snow and ice in a straight line, typically disposing the snow and ice in a pile. V-plows are optimal for driveways, as they push snow and ice to the side, therefore clearing a straight path.
4. Pusher Box
Pusher boxes are like snowplows but are different in their shape. Push boxes move snow and ice in a similar motion when compared to snowplows but keep the snow completely enclosed. Pusher boxes consist of multiple scrapers to help move the snow, and typically have soft rubber or plastic scrapers and the bottom to ensure a cleaner, more precise snow removal job.
